The River Diaries

Saturday, July 7, 2001

I know it has been a very long time since I last spoke in these pages. Five months in Melbourne with Di have wondrously gone by. Two days after our return on June 16th, at a routine mammogram, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Di’s stay here with me, the whole three weeks, were taken up with doctors, hospitals, and multitudes of tests. How lucky I am – to have medical coverage, to be part of a lesbian medical world that listened to my desire to have the surgery while my woman lover was still in this country to make my awakening to her loving face possible. I want to especially thank Dr. Joan Waitkevicz of the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center and Dr. Beth Siegel and the St. Vincents Breast Cancer Center. I thank all of you as well who have read my work, supported it and hope that others will continue to find their way to my words.
